Ritu’s Indian designs on NY
0The 60th year of Independence had two reasons for celebration for Indians. And the entire world is celebrating alongwith us. The ongoing ‘India at 60’ celebrations in New York will be attended by the who’s who of New York’s swish set, including the Clintons.
And making our country proud is none other than veteran fashion designer Ritu Kumar, who has been invited by the Government of India and the Confederation of Indian Industry to represent Indian fashion in NY. Moreover, besides this couture show on September 23, Ritu will also be showing her pret line at a show at the Bryant Park (the venue for the NY Fashion Week).

Ritu’s collection focuses on showcasing none other than the wonder that is India. “The fabrics and the techniques used are indigenous. A Rajasthani sequence details the desert regions of Rajasthan, with its myriad coloured bandinis and tie and dye prints.
This burst of colour is followed by hand-worked chikan outfits, that will display the talent of India’s craftspeople,” says Ritu. But that’s not all of Indian heritage the Big Apple will get to see on the ramp. Hand block printing, khadi outfits and a finale showcasing handwoven brocade saris of Benaras continues this textile journey. India in all it’s exotic grandeur will be showcased.
Talk about India’s fashion trail over the years, and a proud Ritu smiles, “The best part about Indian fashion is that we have formed our own indigenous writing in the world of fashion, unlike USA, London, Paris, Rome, all of which have a similar Euro-centric sense of fashion.
Yes, we do ape the West, but it’s extremely limited, as compared to the vast number of niche markets in the Indian fashion scene. Over the years, our traditional aesthetics have carried us through.”
